Just For the Health of It!

My Contributions:

2018-2019 Jump Rope for Hearts Association Liaison,San Francisco California

Getting in shape is not meant to be a torturous endeavor. There may be a sore muscle or two along the way, but I believe getting fit should be enjoyed, not dreaded. Jump Rope for hearts creates a healthy competitive environment to enroll students in the joy of jumping. .I’ve been helping students from the Bay area with their abilities to improve cardiovascular health through jump rope progression and all sports. As a fully qualified and accredited Physical Education Teacher, I firmly believe in the positive benefits jump rope & all sports brings to all areas of our lives.

2017 Donors Choose project using Kinesthetic learning with integrated (California)

I applied for donors to help donate to students in rural underfunded schools in East Oakland. I applied for a Kinesthetic and Technology project. I created a dance unit with my 9th grade students at Oakland Unity Charter school. I received a speaker and camera to film the students and allow music for motivation. I raised 1K from donor's in order to make this project possible. This was a part of my Task Analysis Project to decrease mile times for the fitness gram test which is a highly valued data based fitness exam in California. Some student's scores decreased by 50 percent. I continued to use the speaker for other field lessons throughout the year.

2016 LGBTQ Liaison Oakland Unity High School Oakland (California)

Supporting students, making safe spaces, learning how to communicate and create a learning environment for all students.

2019 John Muir Occupational/Physical Therapy Department (California)

I often feel like I am a physical/occupational therapist, part-time parent to some students, trainer, and teacher as a physical education specialist. Working in depth with special needs students opened my eyes up to the role the occupational therapist has on students with SN.I volunteered at John Muir Occupational Therapy department because I wanted to learn more about the OT role outside of education and about the hands/body recovery that can then apply to my students.

2017 Probigua School: Spanish Immersion School (Guatemala):

Spanish Immersion 1-on-1 tutoring, home stay program for educators. Probigua inspires applicants to go beyond just learning Spanish but we are required to bring English/Spanish books for children to read and include into their “biblioteca”. This is a children’s library created from a bus. There are not many libraries and books are no as readily available so this is one way students have access to books.

2013 W.A.T Opot Children’s Community Hospice Volunteer for AIDS/HIV (Cambodia)

I finished my last semester in Hong Kong at City University of HK and continued my experience to a Children’s Hospice orphanage in South East Asia. I volunteered here for 2 months. This is where I fell in love with the children and love for teaching. I studied criminal justice/communication studies as my major  from San Francisco State University in California  with the intention to go to law school. I quickly changed my career path once I came back to the United States because I felt I would have more effect on the world as an educator.

Building My work:

2018-2019 SFUSD (San Francisco Unified School District) Physical Education Specialist K-5th grade

I worked with SFUSD as a Physical Education Specialist for one year teaching K-5th grade, split between 2 schools with 400 students. As first year PES for SFUSD all PES are required to observe veteran PES off campus. As a physical education specialist position I strengthened my  curriculum this year by attending SFUSD PE professional development workshops and observations of other teachers. I observed 2X. Once for in class stacking cup games, class management, gymnastics, TABATA and anatomy lessons. Both teachers were thorough and required notes. I was able to integrate what I learned for rainy days and gym use for both ELANS and Glen Park school. In addition we got together with other 1-2 year PES to learn new warm up games, cooperative games and discuss solutions to similar class room management problems that only PES experienced outside the classroom. Lastly, the APE/special needs support on and off campus was tremendous. SFUSD provided sports events 5k, soccer, track/field/ & golf for students to partake in.
